Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter of Lithuanian as well as Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) & Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her father was a carnival barker, was killed at the age of a tiny girl, requiring her mother to provide for her family through work as an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth went to school and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. But she only stayed in school for a couple of years, then going on to pursue an acting profession. This was not an easy path to follow. Even though she got an interview in New York posing as a woman for a magazine, no theatre jobs was offered. While in New York, she volunteered at a bar as a check-in girl before quitting after a few months and moving to Boston. She made the ends meet by working by working as an usher during the day while working at night in the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. Her studies in drama led her to receive a degree from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
